The Fundación Institut Guttmann is a private, social-initiative, non-denominational, not-for-profit entity driven by Catalan civil society and an effective example of public–private cooperation. It is registered with the number 189 in the Register of Private Foundations of the Department of Justice of the Generalitat de Catalunya (regional government - Government of Catalonia).
Since its establishment in 1962 by Guillermo González Gilbey, Juan Antonio Andreu Bufill and Luís Gil de Biedma Alba, the statutes set out the objectives and operation of the foundation.
“The Institut Guttmann is a non-profit organization, and its main objective is to promote, encourage and ensure full rehabilitation of people affected by spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury or other neurological disabilities, to develop research and teaching in the field of neuroscience, and to give them support and more convenient services to achieve a satisfactory social reintegration while contributing to the full recognition of their rights and effective equalising of opportunities.”
