The 'Santa Maria della Misericordia Hospital as an institution has more than 700 years old: the oldest document that attests to its existence dates back, in fact, in 1282.
It was built at that time in Udine, the brotherhood of Our Lady of Mercy of the Beaten, which it undertook to lend aid to the poor sick. And as assist them in returning home "arduous", the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Mercy of the Beaten ", began to host in a special house the sick who asked to rescue it.
In the fourteenth century, the Hospital Santa Maria della Misericordia Battuti already represented an important institution, which has heritage, its organization and administration, as well as a church and a chapel. In the second half of 1500 the Hospital Santa Maria della Misericordia Battuti joined with the one entitled to the SS. Trinity of the Germans, run by the Teutonic fraternity of Udine and the one dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene or Exposed assuming the new name of Maggiore Hospital Santa Maria della Misericordia Battuti.
In 1775 they were incorporated in the 'major hospital three lay confraternities of Udine who had previously managed three smaller hospitals, the fellowship of St. Jerome, former Brotherhood of Slaves, the fellowship of St. Nicholas of Rauscedo already fraternal St. Nicolo dei Fabbri , and fraternal of St. Anthony.
The hospital, so increased, took the ' present name of "Hospital Santa Maria della Misericordia".
Meanwhile, the hospital had become totally inadequate to accommodate an increasing number of patients for which the Archbishop of Udine, Mgr. Gian Girolamo Gradenigo was the promoter for the construction of a new and larger hospital; his idea found many converts and in 1782 was laid the first stone of the new hospital near the monastery of the Friars Minor Conventual of St. Francis (now the building that housed the hospital has been transformed into the new Court of Udine).
L ' hospital was completed only half a century later, and finally was able to move to new premises in which, in addition to the sick acute, they found shelter exposed chronically incapacitated, idiots and a kindergarten. In 1917-18 the hospital, she knew, after the bombing, the Austrian occupation and the consequent dispossession.
2002 - Foundation stone of the new hospital
On 5 October 2002 to 78 years to the beginning of work on the construction of the Pavilion Forlanini, the presence of the Minister for Health, Girolamo Sirchia, has been the foundation stone of the new hospital.
Our hospital is, therefore, intended to change things with the creation of a modern hospital, in line with the highest European and international standards.
The facility will, in fact, 900 beds, all be they single or double rooms. The renovation also provides wide area devoted to green spaces, which will enhance further the green area that now characterizes the Udine hospital.
The new structure will occupy an area of 166,000 square meters of which 98,000 for the building itself.
