The General Hospital Itapecerica da Serra - HGIS can be considered a victory for all.His story begins well before 1999, the year of its inauguration. With more than 500 thousand people, which only relied on the Hospital das Clinicas in Sao Paulo, for consultations and treatments, the communities of the municipalities of Taboão da Serra, Embu , Itapecerica da Serra, São Lourenço da Serra and Juquitiba demanded the construction of two hospitals, one in Embu region and another in Itapecerica da Serra, each with at least 150 beds.

In 1983 at the First District Health Meeting, held in Itapecerica da Serra, in which different sectors of society gathered to discuss relevant issues about the health of the region, the discussion of funding for the construction of Itapecerica Hospital was already on the agenda. The following year, the interested municipalities joined together and formed the Public Company Pro-Hospital that allowed the five municipalities to become an entity to borrow resources and manage your application. Health committees are set up, meetings with different spheres of government and Popular Assemblies pushing for the construction of two facilities until, still in 1984, the state government gives its assent to the two projects.

In 1987, the governor signs the loan with Caixa Economica Federal for bidding and construction of Pirajussara Hospital in Taboão currency of the Sierra and Embu and Itapecerica Hospital da Serra.On March 3, 1999, after more than 10 years of popular mobilization in favor of its construction, the HGIS is opened and has its management services performed by a social organization - the Seconci-SP, Social services Civil State of São Paulo construction, through a partnership agreement signed with the state government of São Paulo. the first service was available in the hospital maternity. By 2003, 50% of hospital outputs HGIS were obstetrical. From 2004, with the construction of municipal maternities for low risk births in Itapecerica da Serra and Embu, the State Department of Health, along with the departments of municipalities and the HGIS they discussed the priorities and opted for the expansion of the surgical area and its complexity.
