The Centre Aggeu Magalhaes (CPqAM) was founded in 1950 on the initiative of researchers in Recife who dreamed of an institution to develop studies on endemic diseases that affected much of the northeastern population. At the beginning as a unit of the Institute of Endemic Diseases Rural (INERu), linked to DENERu (Department of Rural Endemic Diseases), Ministry of Health. In the 1970s, for actions of the Federal Government, was integrated into the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). Its initial headquarters was in the neighborhood of Blackthorn, but since 1986 works on the campus of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE).
Fiocruz Pernambuco, as is now known, has in its staff of researchers, teachers and doctors working in various projects and research lines in large areas of Life Sciences and Public Health, linked to six finalistic departments - Entomology, Immunology, Microbiology, Parasitology , Public Health and Virology and Experimental Therapy - plus the Administration department.
Its institutional mission is "to contribute to the generation of knowledge and technological innovation to improve the health conditions of the population, particularly in the Brazilian northeast region by generating scientific and technological evidence inducers of health policies and health science and technology and integrated actions for research, education, services and technical cooperation. "
The CPqAM develops a systematic work of research and education for the prevention and control of acute and chronic degenerative diseases endemic in the Northeast. The organization has expanded its activities in the field of development of biopharmaceuticals, diagnostic methods and technological development, in order to contribute to the improvement of health conditions of Brazilians.
To do their jobs, professionals still have a Biosafety 3 Level Laboratory (NB3), used to work in plague and tuberculosis, and a vivarium with creating sectors, experimentation and wild animals, insectaries and Core Technology platforms (NPT), composed of the latest equipment, which has encouraged the establishment of capacity to conduct translational research, combining fundamental research to clinical research, aiming to enhance the transfer of knowledge produced in the laboratory for health services, and these , for the population. The research developed at Fiocruz Pernambuco are submitted to the Committee of Ethics in Research (CEP) and Ethics in Research with Animal Use (CEUA) of the institution.
In the area of human resources training, the center has two graduate programs in Public Health and Bioscience and Biotechnology, which offer doctoral courses and academic master. The institution also offer the Multidisciplinary Residency in Public Health and not regular courses of professional master's degree and specialization in areas such as management and human resources policy, environmental monitoring, health information, among other issues related to public health.
The institution has a library specializing in Biomedical Sciences, Public Health and related sciences, whose collection consists of more than 7,200 publications, including books, academic papers and journals, and more than 700 videos on health.
The CPqAM is located on the campus of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), in the neighborhood of University Town, West Zone Recife (PE). The building of Fiocruz Pernambuco holds also the Laboratory of Immunopathology Keizo Asami (Lika), the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE).
