Porto Alegre Clinical Hospital is a Public Company of Private Law, created by Law 5604 of 2 September 1970. Member of the network of university hospitals of the Ministry of Education and academically linked to the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Ufrgs ), the Clinic was born with the mission to provide assistance services to Rio Grande do Sul community, be teaching area to the University and promote the realization of scientific and technological research.

The signing by President Emilio Medici Garrastazu, the law that established the legal form of the institution, was the culmination of a long history to the creation of the university hospital. But the story of the Clinical Hospital begins long before that date. Since 1931, the Faculty of Medicine have dreamed of building a university hospital, which was authorized by the then president Getulio Vargas. In 1938, the ground for the completion of the work was purchased by the State Government, and two years later donated to the University.

From original design to completion of the building, however, a lot has happened. The cornerstone was laid in 1943, and in the late 40s, the work began. Several problems have delayed the works, which were extended by the 40, 50 and 60.

In 1968, the then rector of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Faraco, appointed a committee to study the installation of Clinical Hospital.

In July 1971, the Hospital of the statute was approved and published in the Official Gazette the following year, with the still unfinished building into operation some assistance services:. The first outpatient visit was on February 2, specializing in Endocrinology and the first hospital, a patient of Nephrology, occurred on May 23, on the 4th floor / North Wing.

Gradually, more services were being put into operation, with the opening of new inpatient units and outpatient clinics, Surgical Block, Clinical Pathology Laboratory, Radiology and Sterilized Material Center, among others.

Integration with different teaching units Ufrgs has expanded and consolidated itself year after year, with the opening of new spaces for the performance of teachers, academics and researchers.
Currently, the Clinical Hospital fully occupies its physical area and its resources human, having won recognition as a reference center for assistance, training professionals and knowledge generation. It is one of the country 's most solid and efficient business: not only fulfills, in a qualified manner, with its institutional mission, as it has achieved, year after year, recognition and prominence for their performance.
